The prebuilt home has been around for a few hundred years. The Manning Portable Colonial Cottage, considered the industry’s frontrunner, was created in London in 1837 and used by British citizens emigrating to Australia. Australia, at that time, was experiencing a critical shortage of skilled labour and construction materials. Manning, seeing the opportunity, responded to this shortage by creating a simple, single storey, wooden structure that could be easily transported and erected with minimal additional labour. The ‘easy to transport’ feature was the key to Manning’s success as Australia’s transportation infrastructure was rudimentary, at best. Read more »
